What If I Can’t Afford a Lawyer to Ask for Spousal Support?

If you’re representing yourself in a DVRO, divorce, or separation case, you can still request spousal support without a lawyer.

The most important forms to complete are:

  • DV-100 (to request a restraining order),

  • FL-150 (to show your income and expenses), and

  • FL-343 (the spousal support order form).

Many California courts have a Family Law Facilitator or Self-Help Center that can help you prepare and file these forms. You can also request a fee waiver (FW-001) so you don’t have to pay court fees.

If granted, support can help you afford rent, food, and basic expenses while you get to a safer and more stable place. Courts understand that survivors of domestic violence may need financial support to maintain independence.
